Abstract:
During construction of the Lainzer Tunnel within a trial section, the method of reinforcing the tunnel face with fibre glass elements was applied for the first time in Austria. This thesis provides some theoretical background and takes stock of the experiences from some European tunneling projects. In cooperation with the ÖBB Infrastruktur Bau AG (Austrian Federal Railways) an extensive engineering documentation is made concerning the implementation of this innovative technique at the Lainzer Tunnel. This shallow tunnel in the urban area of Vienna was mainly driven using the excavation technique of sidewall drift. The objective of this thesis is to compare the method of reinforcing the tunnel face with fibre glass elements with the conventional tunnel face anchorage under similar geological conditions. Compared with the conventional system with few steel anchors, the new method differs both in the geomechanical mechanisms as well as in the construction operation as a complete system. In order to mobilized the fibre glass elements, some ground deformation is necessary. In this sense, the new method bears some similarities with soil nailing. The engineering documentation and the comparison between the conventional method and the new method enables the client (ÖBB Infrastruktur Bau AG) to make decisions concerning the material consumption, construction time and construction cost.
