- The goal of this research was to get an update of equipment of the small enterprises. The aim of this thesis was to obtain in depth information with regards to the motives and behaviours of the small scale forest owners own work, as well as their attitudes towards external service providers now, and in ten years. 392 small scale forest owners in the region of Steyr in Upper-Austria received a standardized questionnaire, of which 26 % were answered. The analysis was accomplished by descriptive statistics.
87 % of the forest owners typically manage their woodlands annually and live nearby the property. The typical utilisation includes tractor in combination with cable winch, crane truck as well as grabber. Only 32 % of the forest owners are familiar with their wood stock and 50 % have a forestry education or have at least visited a professional school.
Currently 38 % of the forest owners employ service providers, where by the main focus is based on wood harvest, followed by forest road planning and commercialization of the product lines. Different service providers have different core businesses. The farmer forest owner association is more specialized in commercialization and consultancy. The forest company offices and harvesting contractor cover thinning, harvesting, planning and building of forest roads and wood chip production. The core competence of the regional forest inspector office and the agricultural business development office are consultancy and forest road planning.
Over 30 % of the forest owners declared that they would require service providers for afforestation, wood harvest and wood chips production in the next 10 years. 80 % of the sawtimber and pulpwood is delivered to the market by service providers, whereas 60 % of the wood available for energy use is being kept for personal use.
