The Hydra Probe, a frequency domain reflectometry sensor made by Vitel (now Stevens Water Monitoring Systems) was calibrated relating the temperature corrected real part of permittivity to water fraction volume (theta) with an accuracy of 0.024 m^3/m^3 for wet sludge from the Neusiedlersee. 4 sludge samples taken from different locations in the lake and comprised of different compositions were used for the calibration. Calibration data was fit to a 3rd degree polynomial as advised by (Bellingham, 2007) (Owenier, Hornung, & Hinderer, n.d.). A system for measuring (theta) along a vertical profile of sludge was developed. The Hydra Probe sensor was synchronized with height and location information from a Leica GPS 1200 with vertical accuracy of 2 cm (Leica Geosystem, 2008) to create profile measurements in a soft sludge. A field test was carried out to investigate the functionality of the profile measurements in the Neusiedlersee's sludge shores and its sludge bottom, by boat and by foot. The time needed for three profile measurements was 3-5 minutes, once the sampling location had been reached. Profile measurements can aid ultrasonic scans and penetrometer data in detecting density layers in the Neusiedlersee's floor. Density layers can be used as monitoring data to track and understand the state of the lake and changes to its sediment's behavior
