The graduates of business colleges later often tend to work or study in an economic field. With regard to the growing environmental problems and the necessity to do something against it, it is important to give these students a responsible and sustainable action. The education for sustainable development tries to change the doctrine to be more sustainable and responsible. The ÖKOLOG program, which aims to strengthen education for sustainable development in schools, is at the centre of the thesis. It is believed that there is a difference between schools participating in the program and schools which are not participating. The thesis focuses on the area of teaching and learning, school guidance and school organization and on the external relations of the school. On the basis of qualitative inter-views, where the principals, two teachers and two students of two non-ÖKOLOG and two ÖKOLOG schools have been surveyed this questions was tried to be answered. The survey showed that in some areas (integration of special topics, selection of topics, estimation of creative leeway) a difference between ÖKOLOG and non-ÖKOLOG schools can be detected. The non-ÖKOLOG schools are partly more involved in actions concerning the education for sustainable development than one of the surveyed ÖKOLOG schools. Therefore the partici-pation in the ÖKOLOG program cannot be seen as the only criteria for the integration of education for sustainable development. There are also other factors like participation of students in school processes, dedicated teachers, openness to new ideas and a positive school climate which are important to integrate this new concept of learning and teaching.
