Abstract:
The use of fossil energy has to be reduced because of two reasons. Firstly, CO2-emissions in the atmosphere are increasing and cause climate change. Secondly, the natural resources are decreasing. Organic matter, energy balance as well as CO2-emissions of three organic and three conventional milk production farms in upper Austria were investigated. The humussaldo of the conventional farms was higher than the humussaldo of the organic farms. The results devigate from the results found in previous studies in which mostly the organic farms have the higher humussaldo. Generally, the humussaldo of the investigated farms was on a high level. The investigated organic farms in upper Austria tend to have a lower energy input and a better ratio energy yield to energy input as the conventional ones. Other studies show that conventional farms show a tendency to a higher energysaldo. Apart from one conventional farm there was not much of a difference in terms of the energysaldo of the investigated farms in upper Austria. The carbondioxid emissions of the conventional farms were up to two times higher than the emissions of the organic farms.
