Abstract:
The Ötztal valley is mainly known as a region for winter sports, although it also contains one of Austria’s largest nature parks. Some of the conflicts arising from this fact are presented in this master’s thesis: the sociology of winter tourists has been surveyed using the concepts of crowding, coping, place attachment and recreation specialization in quantitative interviews. The evaluation of the visitors’ understanding of nature helps bringing out lacks of information and possible advantages and disadvantages the actual touristic economy can bring to the conservation of nature. Considering the number of habitats in the Ötztal valley that deserve protection and the ongoing climate change, the winter tourism concept might to be rethought, in which case research like this can be helpful and necessary.
