Abstract:
Abstract Numerous scientific studies deal with the homeopathic treatment of farm animals and its effectiveness. However, in reality the practical use of homeopathic drugs by farmers is very limited. In addition there is no documentation about the farmer´s attitudes or knowledge about this topic. The goal of this thesis is to close this knowledge gap. The main focus of work was on an empirical survey which was preceded by a detailed literature research. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted. The survey involved selected members of farmer working groups in Lower Austria with in total 89 participants. Almost 60% of the farmers reported a regular use (weekly to monthly or at least four times a year) of homeopathic remedies in the treatment of their farm animals. Another result of the survey is that the farmers’ knowledge about homeopathy derived from oral lore, observations and veterinary advice. Moreover, it was found that the age of the farmers has no impact on the number or the frequency of use of homeopathic remedies. In regards to gender the results revealed that women are more likely to use homeopathic remedies than men. A positive attitude of most farmers towards the use of homeopathy is strongly connected to a frequent use of it. Conversely, the frequency of application also acts positive on the attitude of the farmers. The use of homeopathics was directed at various disease complexes, which was mainly in line with the findings from the literature review. Generally, it can be said that there exists no preferred disease complex for the use of homeopathic remedies. In summary, the most significant outcome is that farmers generally have a positive attitude towards homeopathic remedies. However, it should also be mentioned that around a quarter of the surveyed farmers do not use homeopathic remedies in the treatment of their animals.
