In the last decade ENM (engineered nanomaterials) are increasingly used in a wide range of consumer products – so called “nano-enabled” consumer products. Within this master thesis 10 online product databases were summarized and analysed to give a current overview over the products and ENM mainly listed. Accordingly, nano-Ag, nano-TiO2 and nano-SiO2 are currently the most commonly used ENM in consumer products like textiles, cosmetics and coating agents. Contained ENM can be emitted during a product’s use or at the end of its lifecycle, thereby entering waste streams. Based on two examples, the main task of this master thesis was to describe and determine the behaviour of contained ENM in consumer products throughout the usage phase and waste management processes to evaluate potential emissions and release paths. A yearly bottom-up based consumption rate of ENM for the chosen examples, nano-Ag cleaning cloths and nano-TiO2 sunscreens, was assumed. Based on transfer coefficients from literature, the further fate of ENM in Austrian wastewater and waste management systems was calculated by using quantitative mass flow analysis. Results of bottom-up scenarios for nano-TiO2 sunscreen and nano-Ag cleaning cloths indicate that nano-TiO2 and nano-Ag, after diverse pre-treatment steps, are mainly disposed of in landfills (probability of 48-59%), accumulate in recycled materials like compost or building materials (11-15%), are applied as fertilizers on agricultural land (1-13%) or are emitted into waterbodies (1-33%).
