- Abstract:
- Measurement and control systems for industrial fermentations rely on the quality of analytical data generated by in situ (on-line) and ex situ (off-line).Typically, biomass is estimated using turbidity or optical density measurements. Although these data enable the determination of growth rate, they do not provide information about metabolic activity. It has been reported that metabolic activity correlates with the reduction rate of potassium ferricyanide. The sensitivity of these measurements can be improved by the addition of specific substrates, such as succinate and formate. To automate the determination of cell culture samples, measurements were made in a flow-injection-analysis-system.For reversible coupling of the bacteria their ability of binding on lectin covered glassy carbon electrodes was investigated.
