- Abstract:
- This master thesis has as its topic ‚urban gardening‘ and the use of roof top soils, which are commonly used with green coverings of roofs. The following research questions are posed: - Are roof top soils suited for urban gardening? - Which effect does the urban environment and air pollution has on the roof top soils? - How does the yield of the vegetables compare from standard potting soil to roof top soil? In one real vegetation experiment and two laboratory situations with regard to several parameters the roof top soils were tested. The soil version with bricks + perlit and the version with bricks unmixed can be recommended for urban gardening. The version tested with lava (mixed and unmixed) can not be recommended because the results of those were not as convincing as for the other substances. The tested metals in the soil showed no noticeable problems except for Palladium (Pd) which should be analysed further in more experiments. The analysis shows that roof top soil could be used as an alternative solution in market gardening compared to conventional products.
