To preserve the European natural heritage, a nomination of Natura 2000 sites was launched by the European Union. However, these protected areas are considered critical and as an economic limitation by the population. This particular thesis sets the target to observe the Natura 2000 site Kamptal as an opportunity. Through interviews with experts of nature conservation, regional development and tourism of the region opportunities for development of the Kamptal were elicited. Furthermore, the expert interviews provide a basis to identify challenges and potentials in the investigated area and to find out how the awareness about the European conservation area is anchored in the minds of the general public. The generated results from the interviews underwent a qualitative content analysis to filter the main results and to illustrate, in which areas a need for action or developement potentials exist to perceive the Natura 2000 site Kamptal as an opportunity. In addition, best practice examples were chosen to compare them to the current conditions of the Kamptal and to demonstrate development opportunities. According to the results an involvement of the general public in the planning processes of the Natura 2000 site Kamptal and furthermore a solide network of stakeholders of the region should arise to set awarenessraising actions and to generate acceptance of a Natura 2000 site. In addition the management plan, which allows a solid basis for the formulation of measures in a protected area, should be developed further in order to create the best possible conditions for future projects. Only through successful implementation of these components an European conservation area can be perceived as an opportunity and the realisation of corporate projects is leading to a strong region.
