Abstract:
In order to meet national and international climate goals, photovoltaic plants were supported by funding policies in the last decade leading to an increasing number of people getting in contact with this technology. Recent research shows that the installation of a photovoltaic plant leads to a reduction of a household‘s energy consumption. The purpose of this master thesis is to analyse the existence of a correlation between environmental human behaviour and the installation of a photovoltaic plant. Based on recent research insights it is being claimed that the possession of a photovoltaic plant is triggering intra-personal processes that lead people to behave environmentally friendlier. A quantiative questionnaire survey was carried out in September 2014 in the Austrian region of Murau with the drop-off and pick up method. People with and without a photovoltaic system participated in this cross-sectional study. The analysis of the results shows that the primary motives for investing in a photovoltaic system are biosphareic. In addition, the outcome of the analysis demonstrates that people in possession of a photovoltaic plant rather reported environmentally friendly behaviour than the control group. The two groups are very homogenous with respect to their values and their concepts of human-nature-relationship. Both groups show a high manifestation of the self-transcendence value dimension and of eco-centric concepts of human-nature-relationships. In conclusion, people possessing a photovoltaic system do not only behave more environmentally friendly, but compared to those without a photovoltaic system, also show a higher interest in their own electricity consumption and consider more often the question where the electricity they are using comes from. This finding is relevant for energy policy and demonstrates that the photovoltaic system does not only help to reduce CO2 emissions but could also trigger environmental friendly behaviour.
