- The natural regeneration of European Larch (Larix decidua) in the protection forests on the south facing slopes of the Vinschgau is critically observed for many years. The protection function of the forests is hampered by the traditional forest pasture and the lacking regeneration. The role of the special dry climatic conditions, as well as the intensity of the forest pasture should therefore be investigated. Based on the observations of the project "Lärchenschutzwald Vinschgau" different levels of grazing-intensity were identified. In this study 520 satellite sampling plots were investigated along 13 transects, a full counting was done in a 20m wide strip of the existing natural regeneration and a reinvestigation of 6 experimental plots treated in a different manner in the years 2006/07 was done. Thus the influence of varying stand and site parameters as well as the intensity of forest pasture on the larch natural regeneration could be examined. The present study confirms the shortcomings in the regeneration, especially in the height classses ranging from 30 to 130 cm. An extensive forest pasture, a low cover by ground vegetation, good water conditions and soil scarification support natural regeneration of Larch. Likewise, the fencing can promote the development of the regeneration. The superiority of mineral soil and the negative influence of dense undergrowth on larch germination could be shown. In order to facilitate the germination of the larch seeds a periodical soil scarification should be done which can initiate natural forest regeneration. Additionally the fencing of small areas can protect the development of the larch regeneration.
