Abstract:
The aim of this master thesis is to determine the profitability of a new built dairy barn considering different expansion strategies. Planning options with different growth steps and different degrees of expansion of the dairy barn are verified. Two planning options reach the target size (58 dairy cows) in the first year of the period under review. Two other planning options reach the target size in the seventh year of the period under review. The target size of the herd will increase threefold. Considered overall operational there are many changes in the farm activities. Livestock activities, grass- and arable land activities, fertilizing activities and activities for public payments are interrelated. These activities are considered in a multi-year dynamic linear planning model and are optimized for the highest gross margin. Based on the optimized total gross margin the operation profit of the milk production is determined. The operation profit is the difference of the total gross margin and the fixed costs of the dairy farming operations. The financial feasibility of the planning options is checked with a long term financial plan. The results serve as information base for the observed farm and also for similar farms, which production factors (land, worker hours, livestock etc.) depending on different expansion strategies are necessary. In addition, cost disadvantages of unused capacities of the dairy barn through comparison of the different planning options can be determined.
