As the number of inhabitants in urban areas and their available leisure time is rising, so is the demand for recreation in natural areas. Recreation areas in close proximity to urban agglomerations coping with the growing demand of recreation include forests and open land, such as vineyards. At the same time these cultural landscapes build the productive land and livelihood of the landowners. Therefore, the main topic of this master thesis is the recreational use of vineyards in and around the city of Vienna from the landowners’ perspective. Semi-structured interviews guided by an interview outline were performed with 16 wine farmers within the region giving insights in their experiences as experts in the field. These interviews focused on the challenges and potentials of recreation on their private land. Generally, the recreational use of vineyards is supported by the interviewed landowners and a general acceptance of recreationists in the vineyards can be noted. However, there are conflict situations linked to the recreational use of their land: dog walkers, especially with their dogs unleashed, pose a threat to workers and wildlife, additionally, the picking of grapes and theft of wine leaves reduce the amount and quality of the harvest. All in all a general lack of appreciation and understanding of work in the vineyards resulting in inadequate behavior of the recreationists was mentioned by the landowners. Strategies to resolve those conflicts include giving information and raising awareness for the wine farmers’ point of view. On the other hand recreationists are seen as future customers in the landowners’ wine taverns. Furthermore, big events in the vineyards focusing on wine and recreation draw in more guests and have an outstanding economic value for the landowners.
