Abstract:
The thesis deals with the prevention and the supression of forest fires in the area of Villach, in the southern part of Austria. Since wildfires due to the extreme weather events of recent years have been increasingly gaining importance, the opinion, judgment and experience of fire departments and forest owners in connection with forest fires was investigated in a 14.097 hectare area. Surveys of 52 fire fighters and 41 forest owners provided valuable information about measures for prevention and supression, an assessment of the forest fire danger as well as information about their needs and problems. In this context it was shown that 58% of the respondents expect an increase of forest fire danger for Austria in the future. On the basis of 12 case studies it was possible to analyze the experiences of forest owners with regard to forest fires in the past. Moreover, 559 forest stands were assessed on a forest area with a size of 1.577,1 hectare. The ignition probability, the propagation speed and thus the general forest fire danger was derived based on stand variables (e.g. tree species, crowon closure, crown length) and site data (e.g. exposition, slope, topography) and visualized in tabular and cartographic forms. The fire danger class 4 (high probability of fire ignition and fire spread) had the largest share in area with 61%. Based on these foundations, a forest management plan was created, which comprises recommendations to reduce the risk of forest fires and provides guidance for an improved fire control. The need for intensified cooperation between forest owners, fire departments and authorities represents another focal point, which can be justified by the survey results.
