Abstract:: The present thesis aims at providing an overview of research results, statutory basics and real life practice regarding alternative slaughtering procedures of cattle on farm or at pasture. For this purpose, guided interviews with in total seven representatives of the farming association, the Austrian legislative body as well the veterinary services were carried out. Furthermore, seven farmers who are all direct marketers were interviewed concerning their experiences with different ways of slaughtering cattle. Four of the seven interviewed farmers already slaughter their cattle on farm, i.e. either in an outdoor run or on pasture, and successfully sell the meat. From a practical experience point of view separating the cattle from the rest of the herd proves to be the main cause of stress. As important aspects of the slaughtering procedures, reliable stunning, fixation of the animals and sticking were mentioned. In addition, experiences with consumers’ view and interest in slaughtering was obtained. The interviews with representatives from administration and legislation and veterinary services revealed differences in the interpretation of the respective EU regulations, especially with regard to the approval of mobile slaughtering devices. Many of the interviewees – farmers as well as the representatives of farming and veterinarian associations and legislation – declared their consent for the use of a mobile slaughtering unit when slaughtering at the farm or on the pasture. Furthermore, the corporate use of such units at regional level is conceivable.
