- Abstract:
- Most people drive on roads daily, but only few think of the associated environmental impacts. Exactly these impacts are investigated in the present study. Particularly the following questions were raised: Which substances are transported into the groundwater due to street sewage percolation? By which effects is the distribution of the contaminants influenced? Is there another indicative parameter aside of chloride, which is caused by street sewage leaching into the groundwater?
The influence of the precipitation amount on the chloride concentration in the groundwater, as well as the seasonal variations can be documented by sampling of the groundwater in the area of the motorway junction Wels, Upper Austria, and by long-term evaluations of analytical results of more than 35 years in this project area.
Possible indicator parameters can be the substances orthophosphate, phosphorus, PCB, bromine, iodine, barium, and the conductivity, as they show clear correlations with chloride in the performed analysis.
A continuous increase of the chloride concentration in the greater parts of the groundwater volume of the Welser Heide underlines the importance of this issue.
