This master-thesis focuses on the possibilities to improve fire protection in structural timber elements. Current systems either deal with inefficient use of the resource wood or cover the wooden surface with coatings. That is why the main target of this work is to find an alternative way, not to have a protective surface layer, but to improve the glue layer under a thin wooden surface with fire retardants. The chosen intumescent fire retardants were first tested in a reactivity test, evaluating the impact on the curing behaviour of the adhesive. Afterwards the protection properties of the fire retardant in the adhesive were measured in a burning test, where the evaluation showed a remarkable decrease in temperature of the structure besides the flame when using fire retardants. Further testing showed a decrease in lap shear strength for the combinations with fire protection.
