- Abstract:
- Constantly rising waste quantities from packaging materials require a high use of resources and cause far-reaching negative environmental effects. Therefore, many states implement laws and measures that should lead to a reduction of this waste stream. Packaging can be divided into the four types of transport, sales, repackaging and service packaging, the first being the subject of this work. Transport packaging has a protective, distribution and identification function and is predominantly manufactured for single use. The introduction of a reusable transport packaging (RTP) system offers the possibility to reduce the negative environmental impacts and the resulting waste quantities or to generate cost savings depending on the sector or a specific case.
Based on a study comparison of fourteen studies on RTPs in different sectors, practical factors are derived which are decisive for the ecological and economic success or failure of RTP systems. The factors are then grouped into elementary, favouring and inhibiting factors, whose importance is underpinned by examples from the studies. In addition, an explorative case study was carried out to thoroughly investigate an RTP system for balcony and bedding plants in the horticultural sector, which was introduced in Austria for the first time by three nurseries. Subsequently, the factors identified in the study comparison are set and assessed in relation to the case study. From this, both improvement potential for the investigated RTP system itself and measures for increasing the RTP ratio in the entire horticultural sector are formulated.
