- This thesis focuses on the topic „Drainage of roads and paths in rural areas - analysis of existing systems and groundwork for the development of guidelines”. In a comparison of Austrian, German and Swiss guidelines, differences in the implementation details of various topics, with a focus on drainage, were shown. The results of this comparison should be further analyzed in coming Austrian guideline revisions. If needed the guidelines should be adapted. The fact, that vehicles always getting larger and heavier, as well as the use of roads even at times of low load capacity lead to very high demands on the road superstructure. Because a sustainable load capacity can only be achieved with a sufficient drainage, the “Österreichische Forschungsgesellschaft Straße-Schiene-Verkehr” (FSV) wants to develop a drainage guideline which is adapted to rural roads and paths. As a basis for a coming guideline existing drainage systems of rural roads and paths were analyzed. For this, a survey took place in the Austrian federal states in the form of a personal interview of responsible representatives of the state governments or road conservation associations. In total 48 roads including their drainage systems could be surveyed. The obtained information was systematically evaluated and summarized for each drainage system. In particular, the frequency of the existing drainage systems, the suitable material, as well as the correct dimensioning and the advantages and disadvantages of the different drainage systems were described. Finally, a summary of the results and the experience gained from the survey has been used to prepare a recommendation for the basis of a coming drainage guideline for rural roads and paths.
