Abstract:
This diploma thesis aimed to investigate and discuss whether there are certain factors of the riverbank structure that have an influence on the amount of plastic littering and the composition of the plastic at selected locations along the river Danube. The effect of the Donauinselfest 2018 on the volume of littering on the Donauinsel (Danube Island in Vienna) was also examined. The investigation of the littered plastic should provide information about which plastics are littered in certain areas and whether correlations to different factors can be recognized. Looking at the mass composition of littered items in the collection area, the mean PET bottle fraction amounts to 24%. Second most frequently found are other plastics (Plastic fragments, Non-Packaging Containers (e.g. buckets), Toys and Leisure items) (15%) followed by other plastic packaging (Non-food packaging) (14%). There are differences between the selected sampling areas in share and appearance of the fractions. However, no significant correlation could be established between a certain riverbank structure and the share or appearance of a functional product group. A connection between the population in the riverbank area of the Danube and the littered plastic accumulation along the sample sites could be demonstrated. A correlation between the number of inhabitants could be determined with the functional product group of PET bottles but not for other functional groups. The survey on the Donauinsel showed no significant impact of the annual Donauinselfest of 2018 regarding the composition or the volume when looking at samples before and after the festival. According to the data collected in this diploma thesis, the EU's ban on single-use plastics and Austria’s prohibition of plastic bags, would reduce the total littering mass examined by 3.43% (e.g. cutlery, cups or cotton swabs) and 1.82% (plastic bags).
