The municipality of Sonntagberg in Lower Austria aims to rise the cycling modal share up to at least 13%. A central means to achieve this is the development of a traffic concept for cycling, which represents the main content of this thesis. In an initial step a systematic literature review was used to evaluate the effect of cycling related measures in rural areas on the use of the bicycle as a daily means of transporta-tion. Using a custom-built evaluation matrix, studies with comparable framework conditions were identified. As a result, measures were identified which could result in an increased proportion of cycling in the modal split in Sonntagberg. In the second part of this work, all the basic information and the initial situation of the community for developing a traffic concept for cycling were collected, examined and described. On the base of information from community representatives and on-site inspections, the cycling network in Sonntagberg was described and its quality was analyzed us-ing an existing evaluation tool. 24 problem areas could be identified, for which different measures were developed, including an estimation of their cost and effects. With the help of a custom-made prioritization key, these suggestions were ranked according to their implementation value, in relation to the goals of the community and the findings from the first part of this work. The result is a catalog of measures aiming at infrastructure improvements for bicycle traffic. In addition, based on the basic surveys, tailor-made recommendations for soft policies to improve the cycling situation in Sonntagberg were created.
