- Abstract:
- Urban rainwater management is confronted with new challenges due to extreme weather events caused by climate change. The SAVE project was founded to develop new methods, for especially engineered soils and their planting for integrated rainwater management.
The aim of this master thesis was to find out which engineered soils are suitable for installation in green urban drainage areas. The testing is useful for the further development of urban infiltration systems.
The developed engineered soils were installed in one and two layers (storage structure) and greened with three seed mixtures.
The geotechnical and vegetation-related indicators of the soils and vegetation were tested and analyzed. The data were obtained through discrete measurements in the form of monthly ratings of the vegetation, a frequency analysis, recurring biomass surveys, load-bearing capacity measurements using a dynamic load plate and infiltration measurements with a double-ring infiltrometer. In addition, the monitoring was supplemented by continuous online monitoring of soil parameters. The results of the individual indicators of the vegetation and the engineered soils were analyzed and compared. Furthermore, the results were evaluated and summarized in the overall matrix.
The results show different developments in vegetation in terms of degree of cover, height of growth, grass/herb ratio, vitality, inflorescence and biomass. The geotechnical results also show different characteristics of the load-bearing capacity, the infiltration rate and the soil water content. Not all engineered soils are suitable for rainwater infiltration systems with seed greening. In terms of their vegetation-related properties, the SAVE substrates performed better than the reference soils Wiener Baumsubstrat and topsoil. The SAVE subtrates Kombi and Perlit are recommended for both one and two-layer installation.
