- Abstract:
- In the present study, the natural forest development in the natural forest reserve (NWR) Laaser Berg was investigated. For this purpose, a stand, regeneration and deadwood analysis has been carried out. The data collection was carried out on 26 sampling points in the
Larici-Piceetum, which were established in 2008 as part of the ELENA project - a study on natural regeneration in mountain forests. In this repeated survey the same parameters were investigated, which allowed to analyse the changes in the reserve over the last 13 years. In addition, a comparison with the stand data from 1998 made an even longer development possible. The comparison of the stand data showed partly significant differences between the surveys, which are strongly influenced by stochastic damage events. In the context of the regeneration analysis, the importance of coarse woody debris for natural regeneration could be shown. Large differences especially in the amounts of deadwood were observed. Due to damages caused by windthrow and snow breakage, the deadwood quantities were significantly higher than in the previous study and characterized by fresh deadwood. Furthermore, the fulfillment of the protective functions in the reserve was examined. A satisfactory level of protection was found both for site protection and for the protection of the natural hazards avalanches and rockfall.
