- Abstract:
- Facade greenings are fundamental sustainable green infrastructures in the fight against urban heat islands and are advertised as particularly ecological valuable. However, the experience shows: the optimal maintenance of green facades constitutes the sticking point in relation to the persistence and often do not get enough attention during planning processes. Important steps to introduce this ecological significance into the maintenance are missing. This master thesis concentrates on the possibilities of ecological plant maintenance in container-based living walls and makes thereby a first step concerning ecologicalisation of the plant care. For this, literature research on the issue of ecological plant protection and plant strengthening as well as practical research in terms of a vegetations monitoring and two field tests were conducted at selected locations of the research project „50 Grüne Häuser“. The results of the literature research show that the topic of ecological plant care has hardly arrived in the field of facade greenery. However, there exist numerous approaches from other functionals areas. The practical investigations prove a significant relation between suboptimal plant care and the appearance of pest. If the plants are deliberated because of false site selection, suboptimal irrigation or manuring, they will be particularly vulnerable and have a bad power of resistance. This is also reflected in poor development data (vegetation coverage, vitality). Concerning the active pest control the combination of different methods like the application of beneficial organisms or the mechanical removal seem to be especially auspicious. The findings serve primarily as a first step towards ecological plant maintenance of vertical green - further research as well as the introduction to standard works, manuals, guidelines and engineer standards are necessary to establish the topic.
