Abstract:
A total of seven artificial floods were generated at the worldwide unique soil bioengineering test flume located in the Vienna river between July 1996 and September 1999. Velocity measurements were taken using a number of different measuring instruments. The object of these artificially generated floods was to investigate the degree of resistance of various types of bioengineered structures. This thesis intends to give a general idea of water currents flowing through the vegetation as well as of those flowing close to the bioengineered structures. Special interest has been paid to changes of these currents in the course of time (on account of aging of the vegetation and the entailing loss of elasticity) and the vertical and horizontal velocity profile forms. It is the first time that the digital measurements of all floods have been comprised and analyzed according to uniform investigative criteria. The results were then shown in velocity graphs and compared with each other. It was studied whether the measuring instruments used and the data recorded with these instruments are suitable for further turbulence research. Unfortunately, the available measurement data were not sufficient to point out a correlation between turbulence and the damage caused by floods. The findings obtained from this research however led to suggestions for improvement to optimize the employment of measuring instruments in future floods at this test site.
