Abstract:
For sorting analyses waste samples are generally separated into predefined fractions, weighs determined and the waste composition calculated. This procedure usually doesn`t regard the amount of contamination (residual content, adhering dirt and additional adsorbed moisture) of the fractions, which may affect the results. The present study tried to find values for the amount and type of contamination for fractions of residual waste and recyclable. Furthermore the influence on the calculation of potentials and capture rates was investigated. A sorting analysis for solid waste was conducted in Lower Austria and contamination degrees determined for selected fractions. The results were then compared with literature values and checked for their plausibility. For not analysed fractions, estimated values were elaborated using literature. These values can serve as references for future investigations under similar conditions. An own study is, however, recommended for more detailed or special issues. Regarding the influence of the elaborated contamination degrees on the waste composition, no significant variances could be observed when using cleaned or polluted fractions. On the other hand, the calculation of recyclable potential and capture rates was markedly affected when considering contaminations. The capture rates, e.g., varied up to 6 %, which makes it necessary to use cleaned fraction values for it`s calculation.
