Abstract:
Under the former Derg government irrigation schemes were classified strictly to size and management in Small-scale (<200 ha), Medium-scale (200-3,000 ha) and Large-scale Irrigation Schemes (>3,000 ha). After fall of Derg regime and the implementation of a market system with all subsequent changes an update was found to be necessary. Lempérière developed under the French IWMI/APPIA-Project a new classification system, which gives the opportunity to compare Ethiopian irrigation systems internationally. This system distinguishes four different irrigation systems, namely Traditional, Modern communal, Modern private and Public irrigation schemes. These four categries are characterized in the thesis.
