The study focuses on a comparison of purebred Ankole heifers and Crossbred (Holstein x Ankole) animals regarding their grazing, social and comfort behaviour on pasture. For this purpose a total of 48 focal animals in four groups of 50 animals each (2 groups per genotype) was observed in southwestern Uganda applying the method of continuous recording. While there was no difference in grazing behaviour (eating, walking, standing) between the genotypes, differences in social and comfort behaviour were found. Eating was the most important behaviour followed by standing and walking; lying occurred very rarely in both genotypes. Ankole heifers kept less individual distance and performed more non-agonistic social interactions. Crossbred heifers scratched themselves more and rubbed more frequently on objects. It is suggested that the differences in spacing behaviour might have consequences on herd management, especially of mixed herds.
