Abstract:
In this paper the behaviour of selected residual pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the stream and within the bank filtrate of the River Danube is discussed, with particular regard to a projected drinking water treatment plant in Vienna. Calculation and prognoses are based on analysed samples taken earlier at several sampling stations along the River Danube . From this data the pre-treatment concentration of each PPCP at the inlet to the sewage treatment works was calculated. On basis of known degradation rates during the individual stages of the drinking water treatment, the efficiency of the treatment plant and post-treatment concentrations were estimated. Results suggest that the projected water treatment plant is suitable for the removal of the majority of the analysed PPCPs. Particularly effective are multi-layer filtration and activated carbon filtration with degradation rates > 90 %.
