Abstract:
The aim of the thesis was the documentation and analysis of organic livestock research in Austria during the period 1998 - 2003. 13 criteria were created, by which the seized projects were evaluated. In interviews with experts the state of the art in organic livestock research was discussed and problems in farming practice were raised. The analysis of periodicals additionally pointed out problems relevant for farm practice. Research deficits were deduced from the comparison of projects which have been carried out and the current problems in farm practice. In total 48 research projects regarding organic livestock farming were identified. The main emphasis in the ecological research was on the keeping of free-range pigs as well as free-range laying hens. Research deficits were seen in different fields of animal health, such as alternative medical treatments, the topic of 100% organically feeding, and in ecological animal breeding. Improvements seem to be necessary with regard to knowledge transfer and in research methodology as well as in the documentation and application/implementation of knowledge. This requires various measures in improving existing and creating new structures.
