- Abstract:
- The cultivation of pumpkins and the production of pumpkin seed oil has become an important factor for family farms as well as oil mills in Styria. The Styrian pumkin seed oil has been origin protected since 1998, according to regulation (EEC) No. 2081/92. "Styrian pumpkin seed oil - PGI" stands for Protected Geographical Indication and means secured origin of the pumpkin seeds from a geographical defined area, pressing in local mills and 100 % pumpkin seed oil from first pressing. The objective of the current thesis was to identify how the PGI status of the Styrian pumpkin seed oil contributes to rural development. The qualitative case study covered five Styrian districts. Interviews were held with members of the producers association "Steirisches Kürbiskernöl g.g.A.", oil mill entrepreneurs and farmers. The analysis of the transcribed interviews shows that the "Protected Geographical Indication" is perceived to have a positive impact on rural development: the area planted and the price level were stabilised, sales volume increased, the quality of the oil improved, jobs were preserved in the region and the local identity and tourism strengthened. Future challenges are: to establish a logistics system or a distribution network, to maintain price discipline, to improve advertisement and to standardize the bottles for the pumkin seed oil.
