Abstract:
Simultaneously with the rearrangement of the confluence of river Sill and river Inn near Innsbruck (Austria) an existing drop structure in river Sill will be made passable for water organism in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive. This provides as well the opportunity to generate a spot with a standing wave for surf use. Due to the complexity of the problem and lack of knowledge about artificial construction of surf spots a hydraulic scale model was initiated by the stakeholders. A stationary wave is formed in the transition from supercritical to subcritical flow only under defined geometrical conditions. One of these conditions is the water table height downstream of the transition zone. In case of the river Sill confluence the downstream water level is influenced by the discharge fluctuations of river Inn. With a static construction it was not possible to achieve a full function of the play spot for all flow conditions occurring. By concentrating on the discharges occurring during daytime in summer on both rivers and a special design the drop structure was optimized to achieve a standing wave during these times. Further the behaviour of the construction and its peripheries was investigated with respect to sediment transport. The hydrodynamic processes leading to a standing wave were investigated based on literature. The results of these investigations are outlined in the final part of this thesis and can be used for design of surf spots on rivers in the future.
