- Abstract:
- The main goal of this study was to describe the present situation of an English yew (Taxus baccata L.) population near “Losenstein” in Upper-Austria as well as to evaluate stand management measures targeting to maintain the threatened species. Three different study sites were chosen, exhibiting similar site conditions and comparable forest tree communities but managed in a different way. The survey was accomplished by a complete census of the stand and a supplementary survey of a standardized set of individual attributes of English yew. Permanently marked sample plots with a grid spacing of 30m to 30m were used to characterize the present status of stand structure, tree competition and natural regeneration. Although there is a high density of reproductive trees (average 96 trees /ha), seedlings and juvenile plants are missing. The average diameter at breast height and tree heights (site 1: 14,0cm and 7,6m; site 2: 14,2cm and 8,4m; site 3: 17,4cm and 8,4m) are different to the English yew populations currently described in Austria. The application of modern beech forest management concepts are urgently recommended to maintain the very vital yew of the forest gene reserve “Losenstein”. Conservation management activities are proposed targeting in an establishment of sustainable natural recruitment of Taxus baccata L. including all stakeholder groups (forest owner, hunters, nature conservation).
