The core of this thesis is the implementation of a programme for the calculation of unsteady flow in open channels which is based on spreadsheet software and its integrated programming language, in this case Microsoft(R) Excel and Visual Basic for Applications. The idea is that in times of computer simulations it would be useful to have a freely accessible programme for the use in classes which makes the underlying processes and relations clear. For solving the hydrodynamic model of wave propagation the Preissmann-Scheme, an approved algorithm for the numeric solution of the one-dimensional Saint-Venant-Equations following the method of Finite Differences, is used. The calculated river system may consist of channels, retention basins, lakes, weirs and confluences. The input is designed in a way that makes it possible to create realistic river systems and hydrographs as boundary conditions by means of only a few parameters. The results can be visualized in several charts and an animation. Besides, the way from Newton´s laws and mass conservation up to a running computer simulation as well as the use and design of the programme and its elements is shortly described.
