Abstract:
In the development of rural areas by building sewers and central wastewater treatment plants, particularly in flat and hilly areas, wastewater often cannot be discharged by gravity sewer alone. Under such conditions, a large number of sewage pumping stations or sewage pumping facilities is required. In order to ensure a reliable operation of these pumping stations, they have to be maintained regularly. Depending on their priority in the sewer network and the technical equipment, different maintenance strategies can be applied. The most efficient maintenance strategy is characterized by a high operational reliability and a minimal usage of resources. In the first part of the thesis legal, technical and economically relevant issues regarding the equipment, operation and maintenance of pumping stations are discussed using the existing literature in the field of sanitary engineering. The second part of the work is a case study in which four representative operators of sewer networks in the rural area are evaluated regarding the operation and maintenance of their facilities. By comparing the operating data of the wastewater pumping stations, differences in the operating and maintenance strategies as well as their influences on the reliability and operational efficiency are discussed. The concluding part of the thesis suggests approaches/methods that can be applied in order to optimize operation and maintenance procedures in pumping facilities for those who plan and run them.
