- Abstract:
- The goal of this work is to take a critical view of appropriate technologies (AT) for urban solid waste management in low income countries (LIC). A list of criteria for each technology was created on the basis of a literature review. This list can help decision makers to understand the broader view and the constraints of each technology, and to choose the best option for the implementation or improvement of a given solid waste management system.
This study focuses on the second dimension of Integrated Sustainable (Solid) Waste Management (ISWM), which is characterized as the technical elements of urban solid waste management. The technologies of interest are in the field of waste collection and storage, transportation, sorting and recycling (especially rubber tires), organic recycling, and of mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) to stabilize organic waste in a municipal waste stream before dumping. The technologies were examined according to their suitability for LIC on technical, economical, ecological, and social bases.
