- Abstract:
- This thesis deals with the impact of skid resistance on road safety. Often discussed in accident research, this problem is analyzed with the help of detailed skid resistance data (5m-clearance) of selected rural roads and in conjunction with accident data of “Statistics Austria”. At the beginning, besides describing the investigation area, the fundamentals of traffic safety and skid resistance are exemplified, focusing on the Austrian method of measuring road conditions with the high performance analyzer RoadSTAR. The second part of the thesis is concerned with data evaluation of the area under investigation, consisting of the rural road classes L and B in the provinces Vorarlberg and Tyrol. 550.000 records, containing up-to-date skid resistance data of a total road length of 2.732,5 km provide a broad basis for meaningful analyses. These deal with the grip level of the investigation area, but also attend to general accident analysis of the specific sections over the period 2005 – 2009. The main part of the thesis deals with accident analysis relating to detailed skid resistance data. Especially accident black spots and the subsequent accident probabilities show significant influence of the grip in the event of an accident, as the accident probability rises exponentially in case of declining grip levels. The findings are finally put into context with legal considerations, using the Austrian law on liability issues. As a result, it is argued that due to the assessed negative relationship, the regular monitoring of skid resistance should become a legal duty to guarantee road safety.
