Abstract:
Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, is located in southern Africa and has been suffering from flooding for 25 years in heavy rainfall events. Urbanization, informal settlement, more infrastructure than people need, resulted in impervious pavement which blocks infiltration of rainfall/runoff through to groundwater. There are some drainage infrastructures mostly consisting of open stormwater drainage channels, but in various districts it is inadequate to compete with flooding. As the topic describes, this study analyses the situation in a case study of Maputo during rain events. The simulation program SWMM 5 (by US EPA) helps to model the case study area, which is determined through the previous studies and local observations. The simulation is only as good as data is available. This thesis touches on data availability in Maputo, too. According to the modelling, some measures are suggested for the study area. As measures sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) are chosen. The measures are selected so that they should be suitable for the region and effective to prevent from flooding. However, detention pond, infiltration trenches and pervious pavement are described and their effects as possible measures modelled.
