Abstract:
The main objective of this Master’s thesis was to obtain basic information on the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in lactating cows in terms of effects of activity, breed and age. For this purpose, 16 Holstein Friesian and 4 Czech Simmental cows were investigated for at least 2 days each in a loose housing system at the Netluky research station (Czech Republic). 4 time domain parameters (SDNN, meanHR, SDHR and RMSSD), 3 frequency domain parameters (LF, HF und LF/HF) as well as 2 non-linear measures based on the Poincaré plot analysis (SD1 and SD2) were recorded during the following activities: presence in the alley, feeding at the feed bunk, lying without/with ruminating, standing without/with ruminating. Video recordings were analysed from 07:30 to 19:30 providing in total 664 bouts (1 bout = 10 minutes). The results show that lying cows have a higher parasympathetic activity than standing animals, suggesting that they were in a more relaxed state. Also the results demonstrate that while eating, the sympathetic activity is much higher, whereas the parasympathetic activity is higher in cows lying and ruminating. Furthermore Simmental cows showed more parasympathetic activity than Holstein Friesian cows, as demonstrated by their higher SDHR, RMSSD and SD1. There were hardly any differences between cows in the first lactation and older cows.
