This thesis deals with experimental and numerical investigation of penetration in sand. Three cone penetrometers with different diameters were driven into a poorly graded sand (norm sand according to DIN 1164 / 58). A model box with a front wall of acrylic glass was constructed for the penetration tests. Due to symmetry only half of the penetrometer was considered. During the process of penetration of the cone penetrometer along the acrylic glass wall, the soil resistance was measured with a load cell. In addition, digital images were taken to analyse the ground movement via Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The tests were carried out in sand of two different densities with penetration velocity of either 10mm/min or 20mm/min. Furthermore numerical simulation of penetration in loose and dense sand was carried with DEM (Discrete Element Method). The software PFC3D was used for the simulation. The simulation was carried out up to a depth of about 6-7 cm. Finally, the displacement fields from the PIV analysis were compared with the DEM simulation. Furthermore the load-displacement diagrams from the tests were compared to the simulation with PFC3d.
