- Abstract:
- This work shows the preparation of polyvinylalcohol (PVOH) – fibrillated cellulose (MFC) composite films and their mechanical characterisation. MFC was made from beech sulfite pulp ( Lenzing AG, Austria) and used as the reinforcement component. PVOH was used as a matrix. Different suspensions were mixed with a different percentage of Cellulose (0%, 1%, 10%, 50%) in a 10% PVOH solution. The MFC- PVOH films were produced by casting the suspension in petri dishes. The films achieved a thickness of about 40 to 100 μm. In order to introduce a certain degree of preferred orientation into the cellulose reinforcement, specimens were stretched and twisted at elevated temperature. The tensile properties were subsequently characterised.
As a result of this research, it has been shown that MFC is an excellent reinforcement in the matrix component PVOH. By stretching (10%, 20%, 30%) films with different cellulose content (0%, 1%, 10%), the tensile strength and the Young´s modulus could be significantly improved, indicating that a certain degree of preferred orientation was achieved.
