The usage of Cellulose-Nanofibrils (CNF) as a reinforcing agent in urea-formaldehyde-adhesives is a relatively young field of research. Due to their excellent mechanical and ecological properties and due to an excellent expected fibre-matrix-compatibility, this area of research has great potential. In previous studies, the CNFs were always combined with industrial, conventional UF-adhesives. This study deals with the possibility to include the fibrils at an earlier stage, i.e. the synthesis of the adhesive. Subsequent, four CNF-reinforced UF-adhesives were produced, including the fibrils right from the beginning of the synthesis. This resins were compared among each other and furthermore with a non-reinforced, synthesized resin and an industrial, conventional UF-resin. The influence of CNF's amount as well as their time of addition (during, or after synthesis) on the longitudinal shear strength was investigated. Furthermore, the properties of the produced resins were analysed with thermal (DSC), thermo-mechanical (DMA) and viscosity analysis methods. The addition of nanocellulose resulted in a significant improvement of mechanical adhesive properties.
