The 'Pürgschachener Moor' in the Styrian Ennsvalley is among one of the best conserved upland moor in Austria and was - according to the Ramsar convention - included into the list of international important and worth protecting wetlands in 1991. In the year of 2002 field experiments were established by the Federal Research and Education Centre of Agriculture (AREC) Raumberg-Gumpenstein at the northern and southern edges of the moor. Three different intensities of grassland management were therewith tested in the transition zone to the surrounding agriculturally used area. The main focus of this master thesis was given on analysis of yield dynamics, forage quality, nutrient balances and botanical changes. There was a significant impact of cutting frequency and fertilization intensity on yield, forage quality, nutrient balances and floristic composition on grassland. But from a botanical point of view, an extensive use of grassland did not necessarily improve the nature conservation status, even though ground-breeding birds might benefit from.
