- This master thesis is intended to support the development of a climate strategy for the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. For this purpose, the internationally recognized standard of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol is first presented and then compared to similar standards which are applied in Europe, the United States of America and worldwide. The emissions of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences were collected, analyzed and presented for the period 2007 to 2011, based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. In a next step, the expected emissions of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences to 2020 were calculated, and a list of activities that could be implemented by the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in the course of the climate strategy for the reduction of emissions was drawn up, with the reduction potential of each activity, where possible, demonstrated. It was shown, that the total emissions of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences have risen continuously since 2007, driven by the expansion of the campus sites and the number of students. Emissions will continue to rise until 2020, if no further action is implemented. However, the data also shows that past efforts have proven successful, as emissions per student and staff have declined. The potential for emission reductions is by no means exploited – expensive measures with high reduction potential as well as low hanging fruit with less potential are suggested.
