The aim of this study was to record the lying behavior and the abode of horses in two different open barns using digital datalogger and to check the quality of recording of the instruments. HOBO Pendant G dataloggers were used for the detection of lying behavior, which can differ between lying and standing due to 2-dimensional recording. For detecting the abode of the horses GPS-loggers (Wintec WBT-202) were used. For the experiment eight horses from two test stables, which differ in their type of construction, were chosen; the experimental period lastet for four days and the recording interval of the loggers was 30 seconds. The collected data of the loggers were analyzed with the Cohens Kappa Analyse, that compared the recording of the loggers with the recording of the video observation. The kappa-coefficients from the lyingloggers were between 0,85 and 0,95, they confirmed very accurately measurements. The recording of the GPS-sensors was influenced by high signal losses and distortions and for this reason the data was incomplete and fregmentary. This inaccurately detection was reflected in the kappa-coefficients between 0,23 and 0,51. Addiotionally, there were found functional differences in finding the signal between the GPS-loggers. The use of HOBO Pendant G dataloggers to record lying behavior of horses can be recommended, the use of GPS-loggers in areas round stables should not be used because of unreliable results.
