In the next decades an increase in cooling energy demand in nearly all European cities is very likely. One of the reasons is the expected climate change in terms of more cooling degree days (average mean temperature ≥18, 3°C). This master thesis predicts the cooling energy demand for different types of buildings in Vienna and Milan (single family house, office building and apartment block). Furthermore it describes the different types and aspects of applicable room air conditioners, which are split air conditioners, packaged air conditioners and mobile air conditioners. Based on these types of appliances the overall costs of cooling are calculated. These costs consist of purchase prices, cost for installation, cost for maintenance and energy costs. Eventually the total costs for reference buildings in Vienna and Milan are mapped for the next decades to illustrate one of the consequences of climate change.The results of the calculations make clear that there will be a strong increase of the costs for cooling in the next decades.
