In the present study, the nutritional status and the risk of eutrophication of fens in the Styrian Salzkammergut in Austria was investigated. The aim of this work was on the one hand to find out whether the evaluation criteria for assessing the level of eutrophication using the carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N) in the soil after SUCCOW and STEGMANN (2001) applies to the calcareous fens in the Styrian Salzkammergut. On the other hand, was investigated which plant nutrient primary limits plant production in calcareous fens. The evaluation of nutritional status and the risk of eutrophication of fens is important to develop agricultural measures for conservation of typical fen vegetation and biodiversity.The studied fens were calcareous fens covered by the plant communities Caricetum davallianae and Schoenetum ferruginei. In the study area, 79 soil samples were taken. At all sampling sites vegetation surveys were made. In addition, 45 samples of vascular plants and 27 samples of bryophytes were analyzed. The data were statistically analyzed using correlation analysis. The results of this study show that the C/N criteria are not suitable for the evaluation of the level of eutrophication of calcareous fens in the study area. C/N ratios in the soil samples around 17 do not indicate eutrophic fens, as all study sites have typical plant communities for undisturbed fens. The phosphorus-nitrogen ratio after WASSEN et al. (1995) and the nitrogen-phosphorus ratio after KOERSELMAN and MEULEMAN (1996) in the plant material were used as indicators to assess the limiting nutrient. Based on the analysis of vascular plants, phosphorus seems to be the primary limiting nutrient in the studied calcareous fens. Therefore, the discharge of phosphorus in fen ecosystems must be avoided if the existing plant community should be obtained. The feeding value of the examined vegetation was very low. It follows that undrained fens can only be used as litter meadows.
