Currently, the extension of the Vienna underground line U1 from Reumannplatz to Oberlaa is being constructed. The track alignment, station areas, service buildings and parking halls are given by the designers. The turning hall for rolling stock is located just beyond the last metro station Oberlaa. This turning hall is designed to handle up to four trains. Because of the large loads (turning hall and service buildings) the ground in this area needs to be improved. The method of vibro replacement by stone columns is chosen for this purpose. This thesis presents an investigation into the design and construction of the vibro replacement by stone column. The structures, i.e. turning hall and service building are shown with Autocad drawings by Autocad 3D. Then the stationary loads and traffic loads are calculated. Based these Autocad drawings, the turning hall and the service building are modeled with Finite Element Methods. The structural behavior and the ground deformation are calculated. Based on these numerical analyses, the design of the vibro replacement by soil column is made. Furthermore, the various construction methods of the vibro replacement by soil column are discussed in detail and recommendations are made for the contractors.
